Redlands Independent Study Education (RISE) Program

Independent Study Is:

* Instruction aligned with state standards and district approved curriculum.

* Individualized instruction with flexible scheduling. 

* An optional alternative to regular classroom instruction.






Typical RISE (High School) Students
(Grades 9-12):

  • Are working full-time to support themselves or their family
  • Are pregnant or parenting teens
  • Have health problems – physical or emotional - with a doctor’s note recommending placement in independent study
  • Are professional athletes, musicians, models, actors, etc. (can be verified)
  • May be somewhat credit deficient
  • Have the ability and motivation to participate in independent study
  • Are working at or near grade level – have scored proficient or above on state tests
  • Have reliable transportation
  • Have a strong support system at home – parents may need to be involved with the instruction
  • Are responsible, self-motivated, are English proficient, and have no serious learning disabilities
  • Realize that independent study is both difficult and time-consuming
    Typical RISE Schedule
v    Students meet with their teachers once per week.
v    Students receive all their classroom instruction for a week’s worth of work within their one weekly meeting time of one hour.
v    Students may need to also attend an additional math lab or study hall once per week.
v    Students may need to attend additional intervention classes (i.e., CAHSEE Review) during the week.

RISE Application

The RISE Application Process begins at a student's home school (the school where the child is already attending).  Students and parents must meet with an administrator and/or counselor to discuss the RISE requirements and the application must be signed by a student's parent, counselor, and administrator before the application will be considered at RISE.


RISE Credit Recovery Opportunities

Students on RISE may earn extra credits by taking advantage of several opportunities:
  • Attend up to two classes at the home school.
  • Enroll in a ROP course.
  • Get involved with Community Service.
  • Get a job to receive Work Experience credit.
  • Attend additional seminars and classes as offered by RISE
